IC Information;
Character Name; Joseph Joestar
Canon; Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Part 2: Battle Tendency, to be specific)
Canon Point; End of Part 2, prior to the 50-year timeskip intro to Part 3 (ep. 26 of the anime, chapter 113 of the manga)
Age; 19
House; Loki - Joseph is known for fighting with both his brains and his brawn (which is quite the surprise at first glance considering he’s 6’4” (195 cm) and built like a brick shithouse), and has used sleight-of-hand and other psyche tactics in order to outsmart and outmaneuver opponents. He’s the type who usually ends up teasing and trying to keep his opponents guessing on his thought process and his next move. One of his usual tactics, for example: using deductive reasoning to “predict” what his opponent will say next, usually prefacing it with “Your next line will be x!”
Power; Telekinesis
Personality; Due to his upbringing, Joseph was considered a lonely child, though he did have the support and love of his grandmother and great-uncle. However, he also developed a lightning-quick temper and impulsiveness that would shock his family, mostly due to it being such a substantial change from his grandfather's (Jonathan Joestar's) personality, despite the fact of Joseph being a near-spitting image of Jonathan. As displayed in earlier episodes, despite being quite clever and creative with his tactics, there was no denying a reckless and impulsive streak in Joseph - such as his decision to infiltrate a Nazi base in order to save Speedwagon after obtaining information that he was alive and well. This has been subdued by the end of the arc, but Joseph still has a fairly fast temper and can be pretty confrontational when he wants to be.
As the series progresses, however, we see hints of development in Joseph's personality, revealing sides of him that were previously unknown to the audience. A prime example of this is what Caesar and Speedwagon had originally seen as cowardice in the catacombs of Rome after the Pillar Men had awoken – Joseph had just taken a critical hit from Wham’s “Sacred Sandstorm” attack and was playing dead while at the same time attempting to sneak away to try and catch a ride on an abandoned mine cart within the catacombs. However, what he was trying to do was to lure Wham away so that Speedwagon and Caesar could escape. He even ingeniously played on Wham’s honor and pride as a warrior to try and escape with his life, though he didn’t foresee the consequences of invoking it.
Another thing that Joseph is well-known for is how well he can think on his feet and use his surroundings to his advantage. He has taken opportunities to take situations that looked hopeless and shifted it into his own favor by creative use of his abilities and surroundings. By his own admission, however, even though he seems to exude an aura of confidence and tries to pass off most of his schemes as being exactly according to plan, Joseph doesn't always plan ahead as much as he would like to. Because of this, he sometimes ends up making a haphazard alternative to his plans in order to make up for whatever deficit has occurred during a confrontation... which usually involves him running away from a fight in order to give himself more time to think of an alternative. (Fun fact: he’s been known to call this the “Joestar secret technique”, and even his grandson, Jotaro, has invoked it at one point during Part 3.)
When not in fights, however, Joseph is actually fairly personable, if a bit blunt, and has been known to go out of his way in order to help others out. A prime example of this was shown when he leaped to Smokey's defense when the latter had been cornered and threatened with extortion or essentially lynching. (At this point, Smokey had actually pickpocketed Joseph and was cornered by the officers in the alleyway before Joseph went after him, and the entire incident ended up with both officers injured and Smokey staring at Joseph, who promptly freaked out because he was afraid of having to face Erina's wrath for what he had done.
And that's how Smokey and Joseph became buddies. True story.)
He also tends to look beyond a person's affiliations and judges them more based on their merits and "soul", which explains why he allies with Stroheim (a Nazi officer that eventually ends up saving his life on multiple occasions) and has immense respect for Wham despite being an enemy (he ultimately respected Wham's warrior spirit and dedication to his cause). This is also why he ends up developing something of a berserk button for people who dishonor the wishes and/or wills of those before them. This can be inferred to have developed due to his own guilt over having indirectly sent Caesar to his death due to his earlier comments about Caesar's grandfather, William Zeppeli (who was an ally of Jonathan Joestar during the previous arc). The best example of this berserk button in action occurs after Joseph had defeated Wham. After the fight, Kars and Lisa Lisa (Joseph's mentor and long-lost mother) were to duel to see who would ultimately have possession of the Red Stone of Aja, but Kars had ended up victorious though dishonorable means, spitting on Wham's death by saying that the only thing he ultimately cared about was receiving the Stone. While perceptive and able to adapt quickly to situations, Joseph still has a bit of a stubborn streak, though admittedly by the end of the arc, it has been subdued to allow him to think with a more open mind, and he is able to understand other viewpoints and motives of those he encounters.
