Is your character Dead, Undead or Alive: Alive
History: OH NOOOOOOOO
Personality: Due to his upbringing, Joseph was considered a lonely child, though he did have the support and love of his grandmother and great-uncle. However, he also developed a lightning-quick temper and impulsiveness that would shock his family, mostly due to it being such a substantial change from his grandfather's (Jonathan Joestar's) personality, despite the fact of Joseph being a near-spitting image of Jonathan. As displayed in earlier episodes, despite being quite clever and creative with his tactics, there was no denying a reckless and impulsive streak in Joseph - such as his decision to infiltrate a Nazi base in order to save Speedwagon after obtaining information that he was alive and well. This has been subdued by the end of the arc, but Joseph still has a fairly fast temper and can be pretty confrontational when he wants to be.

As the series progresses, however, we see hints of development in Joseph's personality, revealing sides of him that were previously unknown to the audience. A prime example of this is what Caesar and Speedwagon had originally seen as cowardice in the catacombs of Rome after the Pillar Men had awoken – Joseph had just taken a critical hit from Wham’s “Sacred Sandstorm” attack and was playing dead while at the same time attempting to sneak away to try and catch a ride on an abandoned mine cart within the catacombs. However, what he was trying to do was to lure Wham away so that Speedwagon and Caesar could escape. He even ingeniously played on Wham’s honor and pride as a warrior to try and escape with his life, though he didn’t foresee the consequences of invoking it.

Another thing that Joseph is well-known for is how well he can think on his feet and use his surroundings to his advantage. He has taken opportunities to take situations that looked hopeless and shifted it into his own favor by creative use of his abilities and surroundings. By his own admission, however, even though he seems to exude an aura of confidence and tries to pass off most of his schemes as being exactly according to plan, Joseph doesn't always plan ahead as much as he would like to. Because of this, he sometimes ends up making a haphazard alternative to his plans in order to make up for whatever deficit has occurred during a confrontation.

Which usually involves him running away from a fight in order to give himself more time to think of an alternative. Fun fact: he’s been known to call this the “Joestar secret technique”, and even his grandson, Jotaro, has invoked it at one point during Part 3.

When not in fights, however, Joseph is actually fairly personable, if a bit blunt, and has been known to go out of his way in order to help others out. A prime example of this was shown when he leaped to Smokey's defense when the latter had been cornered and threatened with extortion or essentially lynching. (At this point, Smokey had actually pickpocketed Joseph and was cornered by the officers in the alleyway before Joseph went after him, and the entire incident ended up with both officers injured and Smokey staring at Joseph, who promptly freaked out because he was afraid of having to face Erina's wrath for what he had done.

And that's how Smokey and Joseph became buddies. True story.)

He also tends to look beyond a person's affiliations and judges them more based on their merits and "soul", which explains why he allies with Stroheim (a Nazi officer that eventually ends up saving his life on multiple occasions) and has immense respect for Wham despite being an enemy (he ultimately respected Wham's warrior spirit and dedication to his cause). This is also why he ends up developing something of a berserk button for people who dishonor the wishes and/or wills of those before them. This can be inferred to have developed due to his own guilt over having indirectly sent Caesar to his death due to his earlier comments about Caesar's grandfather, William Zeppeli (who was an ally of Jonathan Joestar during the previous arc). The best example of this berserk button in action occurs after Joseph had defeated Wham. After the fight, Kars and Lisa Lisa (Joseph's mentor and long-lost mother) were to duel to see who would ultimately have possession of the Red Stone of Aja, but Kars had ended up victorious though dishonorable means, spitting on Wham's death by saying that the only thing he ultimately cared about was receiving the Stone. While perceptive and able to adapt quickly to situations, Joseph still has a bit of a stubborn streak, though admittedly by the end of the arc, it has been subdued to allow him to think with a more open mind, and he is able to understand other viewpoints and motives of those he encounters.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses: Joseph’s main abilities at this point stem around a technique known as Hamon (or Sendo, or just the Ripple). It involves using breathing techniques in order to push the human body to channeling powerful energy and is ridiculously versatile and has quite a few applications. Though, essentially, Hamon can be summed up as “punching things with the power of the sun”. Out of all the Hamon users in-series, Joseph has been shown to be one of the more creative ones in terms of its use. While his grandfather Jonathan was more of a quick study with massive potential, Joseph himself ended up utilizing the ability in more unique ways in order to trip up his opponents, which especially proved useful in fighting the Pillar Men considering their origin and experience fighting Hamon users in the past before they were sealed away. Examples of this have been shown especially within the fight against Esidisi and Wham, where by using common stage magic techniques, Joseph has been able to trick a lot of his opponents into thinking they had the upper hand at certain points in their respective fights.

However, for as diverse as the ability can be considering the amount of different applications that have been displayed by the different Hamon masters within the Jojo’s universe, there are certain restrictions. The technique itself entirely revolves around breathing rhythms and balance within the user’s body, meaning that the user has to be generally fairly calm and collected in order to achieve proper rhythm. Also the applications for Hamon, while surprisingly versatile, are only as viable as the user permits it to be – creativity is a key factor in using non-standard techniques, and Hamon is best conducted through organic materials – non-organic ones such as metal need to be coated with a Hamon conductor in order to be plausible as potential weapons or uses. Also, while Hamon is ridiculously useful against creatures that have an aversion to sunlight, such as vampires, it doesn’t have as much of an effect on creatures that have resistances to high heat – though it still burns like a motherfucker to be hit by someone who’s channeling Hamon through their hands.

Personality-wise, though, Joseph’s greatest strengths come from his ability to think creatively and his perceptiveness in the environment, as well as his tenacity (which seems to be a Joestar trait). In many of his fights, despite his physical prowess, most of his fights have actually been solved through thoughtfulness and ingenuity rather than brute force, which makes sense considering the supernatural nature of his foes during the Battle Tendency arc. Even in later arcs, Joseph has shown very unorthodox ways of fighting in order to prove to his foes that he isn’t just some musclebound idiot.

On the other hand, Joseph is also one of the more hot-blooded members of the Joestar clan, and has gotten into trouble multiple times due to this. Until later in the arc (and finding out the hard way), he doesn’t sometimes think of the consequences of his actions. To add, while he’s insanely perceptive and creative, he’s also ridiculously lazy and doesn’t like pushing himself unless it’s absolutely necessary. This gets tempered as he grows older, but he also still has a bad habit of overreacting to situations and sometimes seems to hold petty grudges (though it isn’t usually directed at anyone in particular, more toward certain situations).

Network/Action Spam Sample: Oh, well this is just plain fabulous.

[There’s an exasperated sigh, and those that would be listening closely would be able to pick up the slight pout in his voice. He earned his happy ending, dammit. Now should have been the time to revel in it.]

You’d think a guy could catch a break once in a while. Or at least a one for a decent period of time. Let me tell you, even with having a cute girl help nurse you back to health [Shut up she’s also his wife now he can gush about her all her wants >:T] it still isn’t fun having to heal broken bones. Guess that’s neither here or there at this point, anyway-! Anyone mind explaining just what the hell is going on around here? Because if this is someone’s idea of a joke, you’ve got horrible taste.

Prose Log Sample: Well, this is a fine pickle we're in.

Joseph blearily blinks as he starts coming to - gotta admit, whoever did this had guts. He'd even be halfway impressed with the fact that he's trussed up like this if it weren't for the fact that he immediately notices the other bodies alongside him - carcasses and live people like himself.

“Okay, we have officially crossed over into creepy territory now. Well, that’s just peachy.”

Joseph's immediately starting to try and wriggle out of his restraints, energy crackling across his body once he gets his breathing rhythm under control. Though with the blood rushing to his head, this might be a bit more difficult than usual.

“Come on, come on ... I get my hands on the guy who did this...!”

A few more moments, and he’s at least gotten one of his wrists loose – all that watching stage magic shows finally paid off. Another quick glance around his surroundings, and he spots a meat cleaver sticking out of a nearby table, and he starts rocking back and forth, trying to swing his body toward the table. One, two, three times – “Come on, just a bit more…” – and it’s finally within his reach. Joseph starts to cut himself loose, ignoring the painful THUD when he lands – at least he didn’t break his neck in the fall. He lets out a small growl, cracking his neck before his eyes narrow. This was not good at all. He’s surprisingly calm for being in this sort of situation, but also considering all that he had been through, he knew that there wasn’t much merit in panicking. Or at least showing that he was panicking. Whoever did this might still be there, besides – compared to literally trying to suicide-run a guy who was basically a physical god into a volcano with a stolen Nazi plane, this was cakewalk. And maybe a little less of a headache.
